hi all, new on here today I have a 98 s40 t4 cd, the turbo appears to have packed up, rest of the engine seems fine (if a little sluggish) also there is a rattling noise coming from the turbo I presume, (sound like a handful of bolts shaking in an empty tin can) and I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts as I dont want to go spending a fortune on the wrong parts. If it is the turbo, does anyone know a good place to get a recon and what turbo I need? I need advice!!! thanks callum

14T turbo and search on Ebay for JAWarehouse for a new one for cheap. If there is a rattling sound and it's deffo from the turbo then something major has happened. Have a good indy garage take a look as it may be more serious than just the turbo gone. You could have any of a few parts have broken internally and shredded through the turbo as a result

Yes, you should let someone to take a look at turbo. But, the rattle could come from cracked exhaust manifold as well. Check manifold's bolts if they are ok. They might come loose. And even wastegate could make rattling sounds. Do you have boost gauge installed? If turbo really goes down or is seized you would have no/lower boost.

does the catalytic converter rattle when you shake it? Possibly it has broken and blocked the exhaust system ....

Are you sure, there's on leak? Because, when there'd be crack in the manifold it creates very strange and loud sound and you wouldn't have no boost.
