One more item to add to my original post. Is it possible the pushrod coming out of the vacuum servo booster is too long and not allowing the piston in the master cylinder to return all the way back when I release the brake pedal? Could this cause the problem I have described? Thanks again.

Just quickly browsed through post. Couple of thoughts - have you bled all three nipples on calipers? Have a search through old posts - you wil find details about fitting and bleeding new calipers. Also are you sure these are for non-vented not vented. The pads should fit with not much to spare. I have had re-manufactured calip[ers which are wrong but with correct part no. Mike

Hi; Are you absolutely certain that you installed the calipers correctly L/R? If you didn't you will not be able to get all the air out and the pedal will be soft. Edit: Look at the top bleed valve, facing towards the centre of the car. It should not be at the bottom facing outwards.

Been searching through the archives and found some very good info. I looked at the photos in my Haynes book and I am quite certain I have the calipers on the wrong side. I won't get a chance to confirm that until I get home from work, but I obviously need to be more observant. Thanks

If the calipers are mounted on the wrong side - which is entirely possible - it follows from the dual circuit design that it will be impossibe to get rid of all air in the system. To get all the air out, the bleeder nipples need to be at the highest points of their respective circuits. Which is the case for, say, the top left caliper. But if this caliper is mounted upside down, on the right hand side of the car, nipple #2 will be lower than the two channels it serves. And air will be trapped inside. If this is indeed your problem, you are not the first to have done this. And you will not be the last.

It sounds as though you have solved the probem, but another think to check (and replace) is the flexible brake pipes. If the rubber inside the pipe breaks down and distorts, it can create wierd effects which feel like air in the system. John
